I was really inspired by John Bartel’s story in so many ways. My favourite part was when you showed us your artifiatial leg. Mrs.B’s nephew thinks that your a robot because you plug in your leg every night. I really connected to you because I have had some hard times to. Thank You for teaching me how to deal with them. I found it inspiring when you were strong enough to drag yourself down a ladder and to the telephone! It was unbeliveble that somebody could do that in that much pain. I learn’t that tough times don’t last but tough people do. Thank You for coming in!
Kiera
It was really nice for you to come in today. I thought your robotic leg was cool. How many days did you learn to ride a bike? Have you ever worked with that machine again? I think you are very brave.

Mr.Bartel your book was really interesting in lots of ways. My favorite part was when you got medicien balls thrown at you. But the sadest part was when you got your leg basicaly choped off from that machine. The book really inspired me the most inspiring part was when you lose somthing close it is not the end of the worild but it is lif changing. Thanks again for the book and all the details in it also thanks for the pictures. Also thanks for a PERFECT teacher who is mrs. Bartel. Before I go what was your most diffacult challenge after you lost your leg? Bye mr. Bartel have a nice day.

Learning more about how John Bartel (Mr. Bartel) lost his leg and how he learned to walk.
My favourite part of the living book is when you managed to get to the telephone. My connection is when my cat died in this past July, it was around since I was born, it’s special just like your leg. Oh and I had my cat for 10 years, it was 20 years old in humen years, so not to make it confuesing I only knew it for 10 years. When you got your leg cut from the machine did it hurt so much that you did’nt feel it? Did your leg cut off or did it get chewed up? In this living book I learned more about how you lost your leg. I asked those questions because I had to think what I was going to say but it was to late.

My favorite part of the living book was when he got medicine balls thrown at him to help his balance. Getting hit with a medicine ball would hurt a lot but he has to do it. Me and Mr. Bartel like to ski. It must be really hard to ski with only one leg. The grossest part was when he got his leg chopped off. How could he ever crawl back to the phone and slide threw the manure? I will never forget how you got your leg chopped off it must have hurt a lot.

Hello! I was very inspired by your story! My favourite part was when you went with your friends to Vancouver and when you were crossing the crosswalk your artificial leg fell off. You were very lucky that your friends were there to help you! Another one of my favourite parts was when your artificial leg fell off in the middle of your field and you had to crawl all the way back to your house. I kinda have a connection for that part because I live on a chicken farm and I have slipped at the back of the farm and hurt my foot so I had to crawl all the way back to the house! I am just wondering, why did you think that nobody would marry you because you only had one leg? Next time you see me could you try to tell me? Well, I learned never to jump over machines or mechanical objects. Thankyou Mr. Bartel! Bye!!

How Mr. Bartel lost his leg. My favourite part was when you told us you were walking and your fake leg came off. It would of been funny if you saw someone walking and there fake leg came off. That would be cool if you had a fake leg. It would look like you were a robot. My connection, is that I’ve been in a hospital, and my family has been with me. I’ve learned never step over a machine that is running.

I think the story was interesting.
my favourite part was when he
moved his stump! I liked that part
because I’ve never ever seen a stump
before! My connection to the book
was when he talked about that the
farm was located in Rosedale, Chilliwack!
I have learned not to walk over machines
because it might chop your leg off!

I really liked your story. My favourite part was when you said it was life changing not world ending. I liked that because when things like that happen people act as if it’s world ending. I also really liked when the were throwing the medicine balls at you. when you were telling us that part you put lots of detail and I just found it interesting how they were throwing those at you. Another favourite part was how you told us how to deal with some hard time because I sometimes have some to. Now I can handle them better. I have learned to not walk over machines because you might lose your leg. Your story was very interesting. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Mr. Bartel told us a story about losing his leg. One of my favourite parts of the living book was when you were in the silo with the machine. My second favourite part was when you said you were climbing down the ladder with only one leg.
My connection to the living book is I live on a farm and you lost your leg on a farm. My family farms cows, chickens, nursery trees and hazelnuts.
I also liked the part when you said that you were getting medicine balls thrown at you . Another part of your story I liked is the part when you went on the bicycle.
I won’t forget your story of how you lost your leg. I will always go around equipment.

I really liked your story! My favourite part was when you told us how excited you were to finally get your new leg. It’s also funny because when you put it on, you fell straight down. I connect to the story because I’ve climbed a silone before at my Grandpa’s farm. I think you’re very inspiring and tough. Other people would’ve thought that, if they lost their leg, it was the end of the world, but you didn’t. I sometimes have to go through hard times, but you tought me how to handle them. I learned that, in the olden days, they carved wood to make the cover for the stump. Thanks for sharing your story with us!

I know exactly how it feels like to relearn how to walk. My favourite part of the story was the part where Mr. Bartel relearned how to walk after all of the training sessions. It is actually very hard to relearn how to walk at an age over twenty. When I read the story I made a connection to me. I broke my femur from a car accident five years ago and it took me a year to relearn how to walk. It is actually very awful to lose a leg. It’s awful because you have to relearn how to do stuff. I learned that you need to be careful when you are around complicated machines.

I enjoyed “Learning To At Age 23″ told by John Bartel. My favorite part of the story was when he said something inspiring. He said:”Losing a leg is a life changing experience not life ending.” My connection is that Terry Fox lost his leg. Many people lose their legs nowadays. I think the main idea is learning experiences. I think that because he discusses life experiences a lot. I learned that sometimes life is worse for other people.

John Bartels story was funny, yet inspiring. My favorite part of “Learning How To Walk At Age 23, was when he got the medicine balls town at him so he could learn how to balance. That was my favorite part because, I have no idea how you wouldn’t get somewhat injured from that! Another man that lost his leg was Terry Fox. Terry also lost his leg, but that was because of cancer, they still both went through a similar experience. John had an amputated leg that had some sort of vacuum in it. One time in Vancouver his leIg fell off because I think the suction stopped. I learned that some things are life changing, not life ending.

The living library book “Learning How To Walk At Age 23″ was breathtaking. Firstly, my favourite part of the living book was when John Bartel he said “focus on the things you can do instead of the things you can’t.” Instead of him trying to skate on ice, he focused on the things he could do with an amputated leg like skiing, walking without churches, ect… Secondly, my connection was about my uncle when he lost a leg playing football. His name was Tien, his enemies from the opposite team tackled him for the all and tripped him and lost his left leg. Lastly, another favourite part of mine was when he told us doctors threw balls at him to see if he could stay up and not fall down and get back up without help. They threw two pound balls, five pound balls, ten pound balls at him, but he would fall down and have difficulties with getting back up. The living book is unforgettable. I learned that there are instructions/rules to do, FOLLOW them or else Karma will find you! Also, always go around over equipment and machines.

My favorite part is John’s rehabilitation. I like that part because he was getting better. My connection is my dad was also a farmer once. I don’t know why my dad was a farmer. I enjoyed all the motivational words. I will never forget this sentence. It’s not the end of the world it’s just another experience – John Bartal
Nigel:)
My favorite part was when he was in the hospital because he is safe and he can get his leg cleaned. My connection to Mr. Bartel is Terry fox because like Terry Mr. Bartel never gave up he can still do a lot without a leg. He can still hike and he can still run, but he never gave up. Also I learned that never walk over farming machines. plus I thought I could ask one more thing if Mr. Bartel is reading this I wanted to ask if how long did you have your crunches.

The first part I enjoyed when he told us his story was when he worked at a farm. And then the farm was where his leg was taking off.I figured that John Bartel’s realted to Terry Fox .Terry Fox was a man who died from cancer.T other part I liked was when he told he was in Vancouver. Then he said his leg fell off in middle of a crosswalk in Vancouver. The first thing I learned is walk around things not over them.

I think the story was interesting. My favourite part of the story is when John Bartel was excited to get his new leg. That was my favourite part because John Bartel could do the things he wanted to do. I made a connection to the story and it involves Terry Fox. Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer. My other favourite part is when John Bartel can twist his leg and his toes. That is other favourite part because John Bartel could do the things he would like to do. I won’t forget how John was excited to get his new leg.

I enjoyed John Bartel’s living book. My favorite part in Mr.Bartel’s book was when he survived. I liked that part because Mr.Bartel didn’t pass away and he stayed strong. My connection to Mr.Bartel’s book is my dad. My dad came in mind when he worked on a farm because my dad worked on a farm to when he was really young. I also liked the part when he got his artificial leg. I liked that part because he never gave up on trying to walk on his artificial leg. I won’t forget when the people at the hospital threw medicine balls at him because it was challenging for him.

I enjoyed “Learning To Walk At Age 23” by John Bartel. My favorite part of the story is how John got medicine balls thrown at him to learn to keep balance. There were one to 15 pound balls getting thrown at him. I have a connection to John’s story he had something holding him back in life. I am going through an experience like that at the moment. “Losing a leg is a life changing experience not a life ending one”. That is one of the Phrases John said in his living book. Something I won’t forget is he said every challenge has a solution.

The story was interested to listen to. My favorite part of Mr. Bartel story was when he found a thing that he could do and that is skiing. My connection is that my grandpa had lost his leg to cancer. I liked his story because it was inspiring to listen to. I will not forget how he lost his leg.

I enjoyed Mr. Bartel’s story. One of my favourite parts of this story is that. His leg fell off in the middle of a cross walk and his friends had to help him. When Mr. Bartel lost his leg it made me think of Terry Fox. Terry Fox had his leg cut off because he had cancer in his leg and tried to run a cross Canada. Another one of my favorite part is. He was in the middle of a field and he had to crawl all the way back. Something I won’t forget is that other people have been threw more than me.

I liked Jhon Bartel’s story. My favourite part was when he got medicine balls thrown at him. I liked it because it was like dodge ball. My connection is about Jhon Bartel and Terry Fox. My connection is about them because they both have an artificial leg. It was funny when his leg fell off. I wonder who saw and if anyone offered to help? I learned don’t step over crazy machinery.

The story about how to learn to walk at age 23 by John Bartel was inspiring. My favourite part in the book was when he was walking in Vancouver and his leg fell off. It’s really good that he had friends that could help him walk in Vancouver. My connection to the book is when he was crawling. I like that part because it gave me a connection that one day I fell and I sprained my ankle. I couldn’t walk so I crawled. My questions to you is how long did it take to walk. In the story that you told it sounds like it didn’t take long at all. I noticed that you never gave up when you had to learn to walk.

Bartel lost his leg in a farm accident he started to learn to walk at the age of 23. He went to Chilliwack hospital and he had to lose his leg. John Bartel went from independent to dependent. John Bartel after losing his leg he skied and got really good at it. My connection is that my uncle lost his legs in a construction accident. My favorite part of the story is how John got medicine balls thrown at him to learn to keep balance. He got his new prosthetic leg and he fell after a while he got used to it. John and his friends were walking through Vancover and john’s leg fell off his friends carried him back. John Bartel did not just give up he skied he ran he did not give up that is inspiring.

One part of the story that I remember is when John Bartel lost his leg in the thing. He slid through the manure to get to the phone. I remember when John Bartel went to Vancouver and his leg came off. He lost his artificial leg out on the crosswalk and his friends carried him and his leg to the other side. He likes sports. He has a special ski so he can ski. I learned to be really careful.
